Supporting Your Immune System

September 29, 2021

As we enter cold and flu season, all any of us can think about is COVID-19! We are no more ahead today than a year ago in fully understanding this virus and even now, no over-the-counter product has been proven effective against this virus. All we can do at this time is to take the proper non-drug measures and support the non-specific components (i.e., the innate parts) of our immune system to help fight any viral attack. Our innate immunity is not specific to a particular pathogen therefore strengthening it can help us fight against any microorganism that can cause disease.

Supplements that may help to support the immune system include VITAMIN C, which can increase white blood cell mobility, activity of phagocytes and certain T-lymphocytes, as well as potentially increase antibody production. Target doses of 2000mg per day for adults.

VITAMIN D has broad-reaching effects in the body. Epidemiological research shows a beneficial correlation between higher serum (blood) levels of vitamin D and improved lung function. Vitamin D may help reduce inflammation in the airways. Also, it has been noted that vitamin D deficiency is associated with an increased susceptibility to infection. The average recommendation for adults is 1000iu per day.

ZINC has broad effects on the immune system. It is necessary for the development and function of cells within the innate immune system such as NK (natural killer) cells and macrophages (which engulf anything that is deemed “foreign” to the body). Zinc deficiency can negatively impact the innate immune system as well as the adaptive immune system (which includes the T cells and B cells). The dosage needed to maintain healthy levels varies with age and sex; in general, make sure you’re not taking more than 40mg elemental zinc per day. Keep in mind that you can get too much of a good thing as prolonged use (6 months) of high levels of zinc (300mg/day) have been shown to impair the immune system.

Medicinal mushrooms have an important role to play in supporting the immune system. Purica’s IMMUNE 7 contains a blend of 7 mushrooms that provide amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants for general health as well as terpenes, sterols, and polysaccharides that support the immune health along with having general anti-bacterial and anti-viral effects.

As with any other respiratory virus, the best offense is a good defense. Get the appropriate vaccinations to reduce the impact of the disease on your body should you happen to become infected. Make sure to wash your hands thoroughly and frequently. When soap and water are not available, use a proven antiseptic hand sanitizer. If it is alcohol-based, make sure it contains at least 60%-85% ethanol or 60-85% isopropanol; higher concentrations tend to have greater anti-microbial effect. Cover your coughing and sneezing with tissues; encourage this practice amongst your friends, family members, and colleagues. Maintain a healthy diet full of lean protein, colourful fruits and vegetables, and hydration (ideally with water). Speak with your doctor or your pharmacist before starting any supplements if you have existing health conditions and/or are on medications that could be affected by supplementation.
