The Green Lipped Mussel (Perna Canaliculus) from New Zealand has proven its effectiveness for 25 years and remains one of the most time honoured natural arthritis remedies. The flesh of the mussel is made of 9 different glycosaminoglycans (GAG’s, or mucopolysaccharides) and is more effective than a glucosamine or a chondroitin alone. In herbal medicine we believe that the synergistic effect of small amounts of 9 different ingredients is more effective than a large amount of one single ingredient. In the past 25 years, I have seen Perna work better than glucosamine alone. The first generation of mussel supplement was made by drying, freezing and lyophilizing the flesh of the mussel and was marketed under the name of “Perna Caps®” by VetriScience. These are still highly in demand.
The second generation came in about 10 years ago. The manufacturer North American Nutriceutical Inc. had come up with an all-round formula and named the product Maori Miracle® Instead of using the crude mussel, they put in a patented extract from the mussel called GlycoMarine™. This special extract has anti-inflammatory, Cox-2 inhibitory, chondro-protective and lubricant properties. While drugs usually damage the stomach mucosa, GlycoMarine promotes mucosal integrity. The glucosamine, chondroitin and hyaluronic acid contents are reinforced by Collagen Type II (patented as Kolla2®) refined from chicken sternum cartilage. Kolla2 repairs cartilage and lubricates the joint. The third component in Maori Miracle is a fatty acid ester called Cetyl-Myristoleate (Myristin®). This is not only a joint lubricant but also an immune modulator so it is effective also for rheumatoid arthritis which is a systemic auto-immune disease. The fatty acid ester also mediates histamine and leukotrene response hence it controls the damage caused by inflammation. The fourth component is a popular herbal pain-killing and anti-inflammatory agent called salicin extracted from White Willow Bark. The new formula even includes 25 mg of Hyaluronic Acid per capsule. Hyaluronic acid is a component of joint fluid. The 5 components in Maori Miracle form a strong team in the fight against arthritis. I have many clients who are taking this for pain and immobility. The only contraindications are allergies to shell fish and aspirin.
Most people who tried Maori Miracle feel the benefit within a month. On the rare occasion that you don’t feel any benefit, consider taking Maori Miracle together with Recovery®. The MSM and anti-oxidants in Recovery® will double up the anti-inflammatory effect of Maori Miracle. If that still didn’t work another level of activation can be achieved with a catalyst either in the form of a mineral (e.g. Sierra-Sil) or a homeopathic medicine (e.g. Homeoarthril). Remember you should be getting medical advice from your doctor before trying any natural remedies for arthritis.
