Q: My doctor diagnosed me with osteoporosis and put me on a medication that I take once a week for my bones. Do I still need to take my calcium supplement?

A: Based on your description, your doctor has prescribed a bisphosphonate medication, which helps to reduce the resorption of bone (ie, reduces bone turnover) thus improving the strength of the bone. These medications, whether they’re taken daily, weekly, monthly, or even injected, all still require the body to have the “building blocks” to make stronger bones. Thus, in addition to eating a varied diet, supplementation with nutrients such as calcium, vitamin D, magnesium, and Vitamin K2 should still be considered.
